Weighing the black holes in ultraluminous X-ray sources through timing

چکیده
We describe a new method to estimate the mass of black holes in Ultraluminous X-ray Sources (ULXs). The method is based on the recently discovered “variability plane”, populated by Galactic stellar-mass black-hole candidates (BHCs) and supermassive active galactic nuclei (AGNs), in the parameter space defined by the black-hole mass, accretion rate and characteristic frequency. We apply this method to the two ULXs from which low-frequency quasiperiodic oscillations have been discovered, M82 X-1 and NGC 5408 X-1. For both sources we obtain a black-hole mass in the range 100 ∼ 1300 M⊙, thus providing evidence for these two sources to host an intermediate-mass black hole.

Radio emission from an ultraluminous x-ray source.
The physical nature of ultraluminous x-ray sources is uncertain. Stellar-mass black holes with beamed radiation and intermediate black holes with isotropic radiation are two plausible explanations. We discovered radio emission from an ultraluminous x-ray source in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 5408. The x-ray, radio, and optical fluxes as well as the x-ray spectral shape are consistent with be...
متن کاملStellar-mass black holes and ultraluminous x-ray sources.
We review the likely population, observational properties, and broad implications of stellar-mass black holes and ultraluminous x-ray sources. We focus on the clear empirical rules connecting accretion and outflow that have been established for stellar-mass black holes in binary systems in the past decade and a half. These patterns of behavior are probably the keys that will allow us to underst...
متن کاملRadio Detections of Ultraluminous X-ray Sources
We present some results from an archival VLA study of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). These unresolved non-nuclear X-ray sources have luminosities (LX ≥ 10 ergs s) which may require somewhat exotic explanations, such as intermediate mass black holes or super-Eddington accretion. Radio emission is a powerful way to investigate such sources, through radio morphology and the implications made ...
متن کاملExternal Compton emission from relativistic jets in Galactic black hole candidates and ultraluminous X-ray sources
Galactic binary systems that contain a black hole candidate emit hard X-rays in their low luminosity mode. We show that this emission can be understood as due to the Compton scattering of photons from the companion star and/or the accretion disk by relativistic electrons in a jet. The same electrons are also responsible for the radio emission. Two sources — XTE J1118+480 and Cygnus X-1 — are mo...
متن کاملLow metallicity natal environments and black hole masses in Ultraluminous X-ray Sources
We review the available estimates of the masses of the compact object in Ultraluminous X-ray Sources (ULXs) and critically reconsider the stellar-mass versus intermediatemass black hole interpretations. Black holes of several hundreds to thousands of M are not required for the majority of ULXs, although they might be present in the handful of known hyper-luminous (∼ 10 erg s−1) objects and/or s...
